A Song of Promise Luke 2:25-35

Possibly the hardest part about Christmas is waiting. It is hard to wait and see what you have for you and hard to wait for the reaction of the recipient of your gifts. But experience has shown us that waiting is worth it. Today we look at a man who waited. He waited all his life for one moment. He waited and as promised was given the opportunity to see Jesus, his promised Messiah. By the time the wait was over, he was an old man. But as we will hear his song today, we will learn the wait was worth it. Now Jesus waits for each of us to come into relationship with him, and for him, the wait is also worth it. This Christmas give Jesus the best give he could receive, give him your heart. That too will be worth it.

Sunday, Dec 16, 2007A Song of Joy Luke 2:8-14
Download this episode (36 min)
In the Christmas story the Angels had a front row seat. They were there when Jesus stepped out of eternity to become a baby. They were there when the shepherds heard the news. They were on standby when it came time to protect the baby from the swords of Herod’s soldiers. They had a front row seat. Peter tells us that the whole story of Jesus and salvation is “so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching.” (1 Peter 1:12c). No wonder their expression on the first Christmas was one of great joy. They had a front row seat. Pastor Scott Howington reminds us that as God's messengers they are used to open our eyes to the Joy that is bound up in birth of Christ.

Hope Realized
Hope: a wish or desire accompanied by confident expectation of its fulfillment. Christmas is a time of hope. Children write down a list of items they want and in their hearts they hope the list is fulfilled. Retailers hope to finish the year in the black. Employees hope for a bonus. Parents hope that children and grandchildren will be home for the Holidays. Sometimes we hope that relationships will be mended and things will be better.
But all these hopes and expectations are dependent upon people and circumstances. Things change, funds run short, travel plans are cancelled by weather and relationships don’t always get better. One wonders is hope actually a myth. Today we will see that hope is fully realized in the promise of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. He was and is the answer to the deepest need of the heart. One old man realized this truth and reveals it to us in a prophetic song. His name was Zechariah and his story is one of Hope Realized.
