Leaving it all on the Field 1 Peter 4:7-11

“Leaving it all on the field” is a cliché used by athletes to indicate that they gave their best effort toward the contest. It would be an affront to the team and to the individual for one player to admit holding back and not doing their best. Some day we will finish this life and will stand before God to be evaluated. Will God be pleased that we gave our best effort for him? Today’s passage reminds us that time is short and we need to be giving our best for God, right now.

Teamwork is a great thing. When a team comes together and does not care who gets the credit, the possibilities in that given endeavor are endless. Teamwork is God’s idea. He created our physical bodies to be an organic team that works together. He created our church to be an organic team that works together. Is our church working as well as our physical body?

God’s plan has been from the beginning to offer himself in relationship to his special creation, human kind. He has done that through paying the penalty of our sin through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Now he enlists those of us who follow Christ to reach out to others. But he also gives us unique and special abilities to enable us to participate in this plan and to build his church.

“I’m there for you.” “I’ve got your back.” These are just a couple of phrases that indicate commitment from one person to another. And yet we can still let one another down because we are human. What if there was someone who was always with you, always for you, and always had your back? Think of the courage and comfort you would experience. The fact is the Holy Spirit is such a person and he is always on the side of those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ.

Think about what it would be like for us to be so open that the Holy Spirit would fill us to the point that we made a difference in our own community. What would our church look like if we each asked the Holy Spirit to fill us and direct our lives? What would our community look like? Ask God to remake our church to be a church that is completely sold out for Him. But before you do that look inward and ask God to change you. The most courageous prayer you or I could pray would be "Heavenly Father please do whatever it takes to draw me closer to you."

A truly loving parent will correct a child when they are wrong. The point of correction is to guide the child in living in a way that helps them get along in the culture and reflect Jesus Christ accurately. God as our Heavenly Father cares about the same things. He has given us the Holy Spirit to correct us and guide us in following our Lord and Savior.

God who is Always With Us: Studies on the Holy Spirit
Beginning today we will be looking at the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We often neglect this member of the Godhead, but yet he is the one who is with us all the time, in fact Jesus said he is in us. We will answer questions such as: Who is the Holy Spirit? What does he do? What difference does his presence make in my own life today?
This morning our focus will be on the fact that the Holy Spirit is more than just a force, He is a person. He is, however more than just a person He is God.

We have all made choices that have left us keenly aware of the fact that we have hurt another. The initial choice is bad enough, and yet the next decision after that choice is almost more important. In this psalm we will see the heart of one who is broken before God because of his choices. His decision to confess his sin and seek God's forgiveness is by far the best choice.
